Fall Prevention for Seniors: A Home and Body Checklist

Modifiable risk factors, the home walkthrough and the exercises that move the needle on fall risk.

One in four adults over 65 falls each year, and falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in that group. Most are preventable with a structured approach.

Risk factors cluster into three groups: intrinsic (balance, strength, vision, medications), environmental (lighting, flooring, footwear), and behavioral (rushing, multitasking, alcohol).

A 30-minute home walkthrough catches most environmental risks: secured rugs, lit stairs and hallways, grab bars in bathrooms, raised toilet seats, non-slip mats, and a clear path from bed to bathroom.

Medications are the most overlooked driver. Sedatives, anticholinergics, antihypertensives and multiple agents in combination raise fall risk substantially. An annual medication review is non-negotiable.

Exercise is the only intervention shown to reduce falls themselves, not just fall risk markers. Tai chi, Otago and structured strength-and-balance programs are best-supported.

Pair this with the medication-management guide and the home-healthcare cluster's in-home safety checklist for a full picture.
