What's the difference between LPC and LMHC?+
Both are master's-level licensed counselors. Different states use different titles — LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) in most states, LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor) in NY, FL, MA and a few others.
Counselor vs. therapist — is there a difference?+
'Therapist' is the general public-facing term. 'Counselor' is the specific licensed credential. Most licensed counselors describe themselves as therapists or psychotherapists.
Do counselors take insurance?+
Most do. Verify network status before scheduling. Out-of-network counselors may offer sliding-scale fees or provide superbills for reimbursement.
What about marriage & family therapists (LMFT)?+
LMFTs are licensed under a separate (but parallel) credential focused on relational systems. Many LMFTs and LPCs do similar individual therapy work; LMFTs have specific training in couples and family treatment.
