What is the difference between a skilled nursing facility and a nursing home?
Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) deliver short-term, Medicare-covered rehab and skilled care after a hospital stay. Nursing homes typically refer to long-term residential care. Many facilities offer both.
Does Medicare cover nursing facility stays?
Medicare covers up to 100 days of skilled nursing care per benefit period following a qualifying hospital stay, with copays after day 20. Long-term custodial care is generally not covered by Medicare.
How do I evaluate a nursing facility?
Look at CMS star ratings, staffing levels, recent inspection reports and the credentials of nursing leadership. Tour in person, talk to families and confirm the care team's experience with your condition.
Can I find independent nurses who work in nursing facilities?
Yes. Many RNs, LPNs and NPs in our directory work in or alongside nursing facilities. Profiles show their setting, certifications and verification status.
