ACLS and BLS Renewal: A Clinician's Quick Guide

Timing, format options, employer expectations and which provider courses are universally accepted.

ACLS and BLS certifications are baseline requirements across most clinical roles. Both renew every two years, and missing a renewal can sideline a clinician until reinstated.

AHA-issued ACLS and BLS are universally accepted. Red Cross BLS is widely accepted but always confirm with the employer in advance.

Renewal formats include traditional in-person courses, blended HeartCode (online cognitive portion plus in-person skills check), and skills-only refresher options for current providers.

Most clinicians prefer the blended format for time efficiency. The in-person skills check is required regardless of format.

Build a renewal calendar reminder six months before expiration. Skills sessions fill quickly near deadlines, particularly at the start of contract years.
