Neurological Rehabilitation: An Overview

Neurological rehab treats impairments of the central or peripheral nervous system — stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Guillain-Barré among them.

Unlike orthopedic rehab, the goal is rarely complete tissue healing. It is functional reorganization — retraining the nervous system to accomplish goals via different motor patterns when original ones are impaired.

Modern neuro rehab leans on principles of neuroplasticity: high-repetition task-specific practice, salience, intensity, and progressive challenge. Passive treatments have largely fallen out of favor for active ones.

Multidisciplinary care is the standard. PT, OT, speech, psychology and physiatry coordinate around shared functional goals rather than discipline-specific ones.

Caregiver training is part of the program, not an afterthought. The home-care team is usually a family member, and their preparation determines whether gains hold.
