Per-Diem vs Staff Nursing: An Honest Comparison

Pay, benefits, scheduling control and career trajectory — when per-diem makes sense and when it doesn't.

Per-diem nursing trades benefits and schedule guarantees for higher hourly pay and schedule control. The math works for some career stages and not others.

Per-diem hourly rates run 20–60% above staff rates depending on market and specialty. Health insurance, retirement contributions and PTO are typically not included.

Schedule control is the largest non-financial benefit. Per-diem nurses choose their shifts within available openings, which suits caregivers, students and clinicians with second careers.

Career trajectory implications matter. Some specialties — OR, L&D, ICU — are difficult to enter without staff time first. Per-diem can supplement but rarely replaces a structured residency for new graduates.

Some nurses combine a staff job at one facility for benefits with per-diem at another for income flexibility. Check moonlighting policies before stacking jobs.
